Now that fall is finally here, your home maintenance routine has to change to accommodate your home’s needs. For example, it’s time to pull out the pool cover and get a roof inspection. Additionally, your HVAC system needs much attention too. Instead of long hot days, you will be dealing with short chilly ones. It’s time to prepare your HVAC for the fall. Here are 5 tips to ensure you maximize its efficiency.
Clean Up Outdoor Unit
If you have an outdoor unit, make sure to clean any debris around it. This ensures proper airflow and prevents leaves or dirt from getting on the coils or inside the unit. You can hose down the unit and compressor coils after turning off the power to the unit, to remove the debris, leaves, twigs, etc. Check for any damages too. It’s best to address them as early as possible.
Check on Alarms and Detectors
Check your alarms and detectors to ensure they work properly by pressing the test button on each device. Change the batteries. Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years, so make sure you do that if the time has come. If you aren’t sure when the smoke detectors were last replaced, check the manufacturer date on the back.
Check Air Filters
Air filters need to be changed at least once every three months. The frequency increases if you have a full house or pets since they release a lot of dander. Dirty furnaces and air conditioning filters can cause a lot of trouble for your HVAC system. The efficiency and adequacy of your system are negatively affected.
Before you shut your air conditioning unit off for the rest of the year, make sure to change the filter so it’s ready for the next time it is used. Also, stay on top of switching the filters for your furnace to keep your system working properly.
Test Heating
Before you will start needing the heating system, we recommend that you test it. Turn up the thermostat high enough to engage the furnace. If your home is heated up fairly quickly, then you know it is working properly. If there’s a funny odor the first time– don’t worry. It’s normal and should subside. However, if it takes very long to heat up your home or you don’t notice a change in temperature at all, then schedule a repair with our team at Superior AC & Heat.
Re-Caulk and Weatherstrip
If you have noticed peeling, cracking, or missing pieces around your door or windows, it’s time to re-caulk. You need to regularly replace your caulk or weatherstrip to ensure that air doesn’t escape or enter from the outside. When you keep the warm air inside the house and the cold air outside, then you won’t need to worry about your electricity costs going up.
